Citizenfour

I watched the movie called “Citizenfour” today. I am not a fan of documentary movies, but this time I made an exception, because this is a film about Edward Snowden. I made my position regarding Edward Snowden clear on this blog multiple times: he is a hero of our times. Without his leaks the general public wouldn’t be aware of the threat posed by the US(and their closest allies) to our freedoms. Without his leaks only security minded few(myself included) would worry about encryption and privacy. Without his leaks life would be definitely different.Film's poster

If you were following all the events related to his persona, you will find nothing new in the movie. It can be still a good recap though. However, if you have missed his story(partially or entirely), I suggest you to download it(and yes, you can download it legally – it’s in public domain now) and watch it – incredibly good storytelling won’t leave you indifferent. This film is not your regular documentary. It’s more like a thriller. Even if you know from the beginning who good and bad guys are, you will find it enjoyable. I guess it’s the reason why the film has won the Oscar. Therefore, download it, watch it and spread the word.

ARGUS-IS – Does it exist?

I’ve just read about a 1.8-gigapixel surveillance platform developed by DARPA and I am not sure, if I can believe the article. It just sounds too unbelievable and too scary at the same time. 25 square kilometers are covered and processed in a real time? What the heck? Just think about all the bandwidth needed for all the video data. Even considering that this is just 12fps video, it must be still generating insane amounts of traffic. How could someone be able to transfer this huge amount of data wirelessly?

But if the system, which is shown in a video below, really exists, then my paranoia-o-meter is over the top. I could imagine, why the oppressive US government would want to have such a system, but do they really have it already? I hope not.

Rebellion against Big Brother

As you have, probably, heard already, the two major fascist governments – USA and UK(well, the usual bunch), have been spying on their own citizens for the last decade. And I’m not talking about some minor privacy violations we have got used to already. No, I’m talking about massive Big Brother system like in the Person of Interest TV series. Well, the reality, as it happens, is scarier than the fiction. Have you missed it? It’s been all over the news for the last few days. It’s also worth mentioning that apparently Wikileaks was under DDoS attack, because of revealing this particular truth.Anonymous logoIn the past I thought that Anonymous hacktivist group consists from mostly naive ideologists, whose actions were sometimes funny, but most of the time – just useless, but today I welcome their new operation against the Big Brother. I am not sure that they will succeed, but the more dirt they uncover on all, who is behind the Trapwire project, the better it will be for all of us. Maybe I’m too conservative, but privacy is not the price I’m willing to pay for security.

Facial Recognition Service from FBI

Facial recognition technology, which we have been seeing in the movies for ages, will make an appearance in the USA next year, courtesy of FBI:

Today, an agent would have to already know the name of an individual to pull up the suspect’s mug shot from among the 10 million shots stored in the bureau’s existing Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System. Using the new Next-Generation Identification system that is under development, law enforcement analysts will be able to upload a photo of an unknown person; choose a desired number of results from two to 50 mug shots; and, within 15 minutes, receive identified mugs to inspect for potential matches. Users typically will request 20 candidates, Megna said. The service does not provide a direct match.

Professional Russian Mayhem

Do you know, what I like the best about the USA? Their gun laws. I can’t understand, how somebody could be against weapons. Weapons are cool and, more importantly, every sane, adult person should have ability to protect himself and his family, if it’s needed. Sadly, most governments on our planet think that their citizens are stupid children and shouldn’t be allowed to possess a gun. Well, if that’s the case in your country, you could at least enjoy some crazy videos from the USA. Nobody will forbid you that.

Apparently the author of these videos is Russian. Many Russians, probably, envy him, because gun laws in Russia are very strict and you couldn’t film anything like this in the Motherland.
